Questions from the first cloud conversation.
Where does the company name come from?
Matthias Haag, founder and CEO: “I was looking for a name for the company. Lieutenant Uhura came to mind because a current Star Trek film was in cinemas. The name had a beautiful sound, but for reasons I did not want Star Trek in the name and started playing with it. I quickly arrived at Uhuru and checked whether the name had a meaning. When I saw the meaning freedom/independence, I immediately knew: that is it!”
What exactly do you offer?
We help our customers obtain their own cloud platform based on open-source software. On that platform, our customer is in control. Whether this is delivered by us as a full service or as high-quality consulting makes no difference to us.
What is different about cloud technology?
In traditional IT infrastructure, an administrator provides resources for application developers and often even installs the application. This creates a great deal of coordination overhead and friction. With cloud computing, administrators provide the cloud platform and keep it running. Application developers provision their own resources via self-service, install the application themselves and can fix errors directly.
Do you also offer an AI solution?
The cloud platforms we build can also provide GPUs for AI computing. We currently do not offer a dedicated AI solution.
Is on-premise not a step into the past?
All applications run on hardware somewhere. On-premise simply means that you retain sovereignty over that hardware and therefore over your data. In our view, there will be a stronger movement back toward own hardware in the foreseeable future. So it is more a step toward the future.
